The Cat S60 Review
The Cat S60 is a rugged smartphone with a unique FLIR thermal camera. It’s the first device to have this technology built-in, adding a touch of fun and uniqueness to the phone.
It has no top-of-the-line processor or software, but it does the job. It’s a good choice for people who need a rugged, waterproof smartphone that doesn’t care about the latest updates.
Specs
The Cat S60 is a rugged smartphone designed for those who work in harsh environments. Thanks to FLIR, it combines the best design with a built-in thermal camera.
Compared to mainstream smartphones, the 4.7-inch display here isn’t a stellar option – it’s 720p at best. Nevertheless, it’s still bright and is more than enough for everyday use.
Performance-wise, the phone runs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 processor and 3GB of RAM. It isn’t the most powerful in this class, but it’s fast enough to power Android Marshmallow.
It’s also got an impressive 32GB of onboard storage, though a microSD card can also be inserted. It also comes with a near-stock version of Android with all the usual features.
Design
In a world of smartphones that follow every trend, the Cat S60’s distinctive character sets it apart. Designed and built by Bullitt Group, which also makes other CAT Phones, the S60 is the company’s most likeable handset to date.
It has a rugged design that’s tougher than anything else in its class. Featuring a die-cast stainless steel frame with carbon fiber inlays and lots of details to make it waterproof (MIL-Spec 810G), the S60 is drop-proof from 1.8 meters and can be submerged in five meters of water for one hour.
What’s interesting about the S60 is its thermal camera, which can detect overheating electrical appliances and circuitry or spot moisture or missing insulation in the workplace. While it can’t compete with laser thermometers when it comes to accuracy, its reticle appears dead center on the screen, and lining it up with a subject gives you a temperature that’s often within a few degrees of what a laser thermometer reports.
Performance
The Cat S60 is a phone built for those used to working in rugged environments. The thick gadget is built to withstand harsh conditions, including submersion and extreme temperatures.
It also features several innovative technologies, including a thermal imaging camera. It can detect and measure changes in heat energy up to 100 feet away.
It’s an exciting feature, though I’m not sure it’s what trades people seek in a smartphone. That said, it’s a cool thing to have, and I can see why Cat is interested in adding it.
Battery life
If you’re looking for a rugged phone that can take a beating and run a full day, the Cat S60 might be just what you’re looking for. It can withstand drops from up to 6 feet and submersion in water to a depth of 5 meters, and it also comes with a thermal imaging camera no other rugged smartphone has.
It runs a stock version of Android 6.0 Marshmallow with a powerful Snapdragon 617 processor. It’s also paired with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage, which should be enough to handle the average user’s needs.
Software
The Cat S60 is a phone for people who work in the trades and want a rugged smartphone that won’t break easily. It has a Flir thermal camera and can survive under five meters of water.
In addition, it features a programmable key under the power button that can be programmed to launch a Zello app or act as a Push-to-Talk key. It can also send your location to selected contacts.
On the software front, the S60 runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow. It includes several built-in apps, like Speaker Dry and App Toolbox, as well as Google standard apps.
